R.I.P.

Late in the summer of 1999 Coney Island High was shutdown due to some sort of rent dispute.  It's too bad, it wasn't the greatest but they did have good shows and the bar didn't try and rip you off.

Let's take a moment and review some of the NYC clubs that feature bands:  Brownies features the double threat of skunk beer AND skunk bands.  CBGBs just doesn't get the same caliber of bands that it used to.  The Continental is just too small a venue for big bands (although they certainly try to fit everyone).  Irving Plaza and Roseland are as annoying as their full page color ads in Voice.  Tramps has more hipsters than cigarette butts in their urinals.

Coney consistently gets the biggest and best bands. The drinks are slightly expensive, but not oppressively so (HELLO Tramps! Paying attention?). Sure the crowd is rude, sweaty and smells, but we all have to sacrifice to hear good music. Ground level is where the big bands play while the Cyclone Room (upstairs) features smaller local groups, featured DJs (everything from punk nights to New Wave & '80's) and occasional go-go girls. Outside of seeing bands there is not a whole lot going on at Coney. I prefer the Continental when it comes to drinking in clubs that don't have bands playing.
