Great Jones Cafe
54 Great Jones Street,
between Lafayette and Bowery

by Patrick (5/7/99)

The first time I brought Pete to the Great Jones Cafe, he said "THIS place!?!" For someone who goes to as many raves and parties in old warehouses, Pete apparently still has a problem judging books by their covers. There isn't much on Great Jones Street, so with its bright orange veneer and neon "EAT" sign in the window, the Cafe stands out. Some might argue that Jones is more of a restaurant then a bar, but I have spent many pleasurable hours drinking there. OK, I'll admit that the hours I've spent there have been waiting for a table, but they were enjoyable. Jones serves spectacular Cajun fare at great prices ($8 to $10 a plate). The ever-important jukebox is a pre-CD throwback featuring great '60's and '70's 45's (so don't bump it). A good assortment of beer (including Ibita's Turbo Dog) and their famous Cajun martinis round out the highlights of Jones.
