Holiday Cocktail Lounge
75 St. Marks Place
between First and Second Avenues

The service is bad, the bathrooms are putrid and the lighting dim. I love this place! The beer is as cheap as you're going to get it in NYC and the jukebox has a nice selection of jazz and Sinatra. It has odd hours (closes at 12:45am) and some days it doesn't even open at all (Wednesdays and Sundays I think). It's a great old dive that has its share of misfits and miserable old men. I think it was a runner up for the interior of the bar in "Barfly." If you're lucky the old drunken bartender named "Pops" will regale you with stories about how Sinatra "used to bring a different girl in here every night!" While I do not vouch for the accuracy of Pops' stories, I do suggest listening to them. They extremely are entertaining. Unfortunately, Pops doesn't open up very much, your lucky if he grunts at you while giving you your order. On the bad side, Holiday gets overcrowded on the weekends and the mixed drinks are atrocious. I don't go to Holiday much anymore because of the location. My friends and I only go there to catch a quick drink before going to shows at Coney Island High or the Continental, otherwise we head further east for fun.
