Nightingale Bar
213 Second Avenue,
northwest corner of 13th Street
by Patrick (5/23/99)
A few steps below a dive, Nightingales is still a great place to grab a quick drink during
happy hour. Back in a cramped corner sits one of the worst (and therefore, best) pool
tables in the Northeast. Featuring odd bumps in the middle of the table and masticated
cues, the table can throw-off even the most experienced player. Along with cheap pool and
cheap beer, on the weekends Nightingales also features cheap music. A number of small
local bands perform here (including the kick-ass rockabilly sounds of Simon and the
Bar-Sinisters. I once saw them play for 3 1/2 hours with out taking a break.) for a small
cover charge (usually in the neighborhood of $5). If the dive atmosphere becomes too
oppressive (or if your date isn't finding it as amusing as you hoped she would) just down
the block you can enjoy the overpriced, chi-chi elegance of the Flamingo East and Gemini
Lounge.
