The Lower East Side

Because of the gentrification of the East Village, the Lower East Side is the last remaining section of "classic downtown." Since the turn of the century, the undesirables of New York have congregated on the Lower East Side; because of rising rents in the East Village (as well as the rest of Manhattan), artists, musicians, foreigners and assorted other freaks who don't consider the outer-boros an option, have filtered down to the narrow streets of the Lower East Side. While it's no longer as treacherous as it was at the dawn of the 1900s, the neighborhood still holds a feeling of impending doom. Thanks to the various groups that inhabit the Lower East Side, there are many different venues to enjoy. Equally filled with dives and hipster hangouts, there seems to be something for everyone.
