Arlene Grocery

In my opinion, there is only one reason to go to Arlene Grocery:  free music.

In a city where you still have to pay through the nose to see '80s wash-ups like Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, free music is almost as valuable as free beer (almost).

Free music was the building block for this otherwise indistinguishable bar; nightly you could walk in and see someone playing live.  Admittedly, in the early days the quality of the performing bands was questionable but over time more reputable bands began to perform.

While not a favorite hangout of mine, I can't deny that the bar does have a certain allure.

on a personal note, the first time I went to Arlene, I some how managed to spill my Guinness on Joe Jackson.
